The mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, running again in the October local elections, reaffirmed this Wednesday the independence of his project, but admitted that "all support is welcome" and that the PSD recognizes the "social-democratic policies" of the municipality.
On Tuesday, the PSD announced that it had decided in its National Political Committee to support the candidacy of the mayor — who previously presided over this municipality in the Lisbon district elected by the party — for a third consecutive term in the elections on October 12.
"My candidacy is independent, and it is on this basis that we want to maintain the trust of the people of Oeiras. Naturally, all support is welcome , and this support from the PSD means that the party identifies with the social-democratic policies that have been developed by this independent movement over the past few years," said Isaltino Morais, in a written statement to the Lusa news agency.
Isaltino Morais was elected mayor of Oeiras for the first time in 1985, on the PSD list, subsequently renewing his mandate in the elections of 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001.
In 2009, he won the Oeiras Chamber again, this time as an independent, but interrupted his mandate in 2013, after being sentenced to two years in prison for tax fraud and money laundering.
In 2017, he ran again for the municipality as an independent and won again, as he did in the 2021 elections. Due to the law on term limits, this year's local elections will be the last in which he will be able to run in the municipality.
